Rifle scopes in BAS deltas/Rangers
« on: 30 Dec 2004, 02:29:42 »
Hello,

I should like to ask a question about one of the "addons"
from Ballistic (BAS). I refer to the excellent Rangers/Deltas
pack. I think the models there are really, really good, but
could someone please explain how to use the scopes? In particular
I should like to know what the symbology on the sight on
(for example) the M249 SPW carried by the "Ranger Machine Gunner"
means and if it has any actual application in the game. What
do the figures 4 and 6 mean? What range is the sight "zeroed"
at?
Similarly, the sight on the M24 SWS carried by (for example)
the "Ranger Sniper". Are those real mil dots that you can
actually use to estimate range? If they are, then how many mils
do the dots represent? I have experimented a bit with them
(setting up some poor civilians on "Desert Island" and zapping
them from a prone position from various ranges) but can't yet
seem to work out if the sight symbology actually does anything
useful or is just eye candy. The standard SWAG (Scientific Wild
Ass Guess) that field snipers usually use is to mil dot a human
figure from crotch to head, call that a meter (or a yard or 36",
it don't matter) and plug it into the formula 1000/mils = range
(my dad is an ex "law enforcement sniper") but it doesn't work
too well for the M24 sights in the BAS Deltas/Rangers package.

The focussable sight on the standard issue OFP M21 is good
and the SVD Dragunov sights (I use one of the available "modded"
examples) are pretty good too. I like the sniping possibilities in
OFP best of all (you aren't bothered so much by the sucky AI
then  ;o)). It isn't absolutely totally realistic but it is
close enough to be interesting: "I am a stone...I do not move...
(or should that be "I am stoned...")

I can't answer your question, but really don't think the numbers on the M249 SPW mean anything (prove me wrong? :-\) I just center the red dot and fire away, if I miss, adjust up or down depending on where the rounds hit.

As for the M24, not to knock the BAS guys (they are awesome 8)) but the sights on that and the Sr25 are kinda sad. I don't think the little marks help you identify range like the dragunov does. But I've done the same experiments on desert island with a M82 or some .50 cal sniper rifle. Found myself pointing the damn thing up like a mortar at those super far away ranges, and puttin a bullet in that soldiers head :'(, I've forgotten what range, but you could barely see him in the scope with a loooong FOW from the options menu. :P ;D

And I'll continue my ranting, the SR25 is a much more effective weapon than the m24 in the OFP world, like the M21, combining semi auto firing with an accurate scope/weapon and a 20 round mag. while the M24 has a 5(6? haven't played in a while) round mag with some bang-click-click-bang action firing. But that's my opinion. :gunman:

Cheers & goodnight, maybe....
