Nomap
« on: 22 Dec 2004, 23:28:07 »
Had to start a stupid question topic as I couldn't find anything relating to nomap.
I haven't played OFP for months and having just installed it again, I need to get everything up to scratch again.
So I know if you put -nomap or -nosplash in somewhere there is less lag, but for the life of me I can't remember where you put it. Can someone tell me how to get to where you have to enter it please.

Thanks :)

go to properties of the short cut and add -nomap -nosplash to the end of the shortcut

Is this really less lag (for example in a mission)?  Or is it less delay in starting the game?  Either of these I would find very useful.

Thanks people :)

If you enter -Nomap there is less lag in the game (missions) as far as I know and have experienced.
If you enter -nosplash the game bypasses the BIS and Codemasters logos so starts more quickly.

So what does the "-Nomap" actually do that lightens up the lag?  Does it make it so that you have no in game map or what?   Is there any kind of negative effect to the game play?

None that I've noticed. Has no noticable thing to do with the map.

-nomap stops the game from memory mapping all the addons in the Addons folder.

In effect they are only mapped when needed.

That should be set as default - that's much more a good thing than bad.

(I'm glad I dropped by, now my huge addons folders won't give me so much trouble :D)

I presume that +nomap would reduce memory requirements, but increase CPU load in that it will have to do work whenever it needs to map an addon?

-nomap being the opposite

I was thrown a bit by the double negative (- and no)

-nomap is only a switch if you include it in the shortcut target field the addons will not get memory mapped at startup.

If you leave the switch out they will all get mapped.

Hope that clears it up a little........a bit like mud   ::)

Actually I thought it was the other way around.  All switches have + and a -

I thought +nomap = no mapping
and -nomap = mapping

mapping means things are already in memory and so will not need to be mapped when they are needed.

But I must admit to having no knowledge.  I am working on assumptions

Hmmmmmm.........all the switches are preceded by the '-' though......even the -mod=@ECP and -nosplash.

Yes, as far as I know, "-", in this case, isn't the opposite of "+" at all ; it has nothing to do with it.

I've also seen "/" used instead of "-".

eg. /nospash /nomap etc.
