Another simple one
« on: 09 Nov 2004, 23:07:50 »
How can I control the wind speed and direction?

I have a fire inside a house (it is raining so this is where the soldiers are sheltering) and I would like the smoke to blow through a window not through the wall!

You can't.   At least I don't think you can.

Wind gets stronger as the weather gets worse.    Direction is random.

Here's a thought: would the wind direction change if you, for instance, did something like:

0 setovercast 0
~0.001
0 setovercast 1

If it were changed to a random direction each time you did the above, then you could add a check to see what that direction is, via the drop command. Then you could just keep repeating until you had the desired wind direction. Just a thought, but perhaps it would work?

The "random" thing in OFP is soooooo sticky ... you can get the same wind direction 8 or 10 times in a row when hitting retry repeatedly.    But with a fast loop it might work.

Can I detect which direction the wind is blowing from a script?

Yes, using the drop command.   But I have no idea how.    Droplets drift with the wind and you can probably get their velocity or something.

I don't think there is a quick and easy way.

Yuck. I think I might move the fire - or at least live with it for a while.  See if any beta testers complain

I believe that most fire scripts have a velocity param, which you usually set to [0,0,0].  To have the bloody fire blow out the window, just tweak the velocity settings to what you want.

THobson means he is using a 'fire' placed from the editor.

An object not a script.

And 'bog standard' means 'basic'.

Oh for the bloody sake of me, shoot me! I'm a loon, straight out!  :P :o

I just found a forum that I had posted a while back (but forgot to save the link) that we discussed wind. Wind in the game is random, so you would have to modify the game files to fix it. To set the smoke to drift one way, just use a fire script, of which can be found in the ed depot.

Hehehehehe........

I think Tyger recommends that you use a fire script instead of the object.

Apparently you can control the smoke directions with said script.

Sorry, mates. Tryin to do several things at once.

Yes, I suggest a fire script if ur not using the fireplace for sheding light on the area.
