Make characters speak custom strings ?
« on: 07 Nov 2004, 21:49:08 »
Yes well ok, I was just wondering when I read a commands reference and then came across something with the name of: Game Voices, a list of names of the voices that u can here in the game im guessing. Now... what im wondering is that, that list must be there for a reason. And im hoping that reason to be that you can actualy make custom text strings and then make a character say it out loud, f.ex. if u would make a TitleText string on the center of the screen and at the same time a guy near you would say that same string with a realistic voice. Now I got real excited about this and started to check around for tutorials about how this could be done.

I found a tutorial here called: How to make characters talk, chat etc. I read it but didn't understand much of it. Could anyone tell me, is it actualy possible to make custom text strings and have someone say them out loud with a realistic voice ? Sadly im guessing that it isn't so because from what I have understood it is very hard to make a realistic speech generator, unless you would have that one guy say every possible sentance in the world, about 10000000000 billion :). But if it is so then I say WOW. Please tell me everything.

Sorry - OFP doesn't do text-to-speech.

You have to record the custom speech and configure it in your mission as either a sound or as a radio message.  You also set up a link to the text string that can be displayed as the sound/radio sample plays.  It's a challenge the first time you do it . . .

Read Bloodmixer's sound tutorial - that's how I cracked it.

I and others have tried third-party text-to-speech engines to generate the sound files but I'd save yourself the bother of trying - the results aren't really usable.

You can, however, display text strings without the sound by other, simpler means to get you going.  You can use it as a 'temp-track' to work out what speech you need as it's a bugger trying to record additional speech at a later date and getting it to sound consistent.
