Targeting Aid
« on: 08 Oct 2004, 13:54:27 »
Hey
I read a book ages ago, I can't remeber the name... Dreamland possibly?
Anyway, it is set in the near future, at some Area 51esqe base, that developed weaspons systems and fighters..
And they had they're own, erm, defence force?
That had stuff like armour that is very thin, but sill would stop a 9mm bullet at 10m, MP5 with thickened clips so they hold 60 clips, and had nearly no recoil etc, and explained how it all worked..

And this helmet that had a HUD in the visor..
Is something like this possible?
Like outlining movement, directions to sounds etc

I'm sorry I can't give more info, but I did read the book a fair while ago :P

You mean... a helmet with information about forces around you?  I'm sure it's possible... but I'm not sure how to implement it.

Yeah, basicly..
It highlights enemys on the screen (maybe could have a battery that runs down if it's eneabled)

Sort of like a IFF system? It Identifys freind from foe? That'd be useful, especially in night missions.

It could work out as that too..
Maybe divide the screen up into sectors, check if theres an enemy if there, change that secion to a semi-tranparent colour?
Kinda like in SC:Pandora Tomorrow :P
How would it detect the enemy though?

A trigger around the player... add the enemy into an array, it can't be that hard.

Couldn't you use the friendly and enemy TAG that's on when in cadet mode or when turned on in options?

Put you're aimer on the guy and its either green for friendlies or red for enemy.

Actually you have alot of HUD info already. Weapon, mags, how many shots left in mag....

But it'd be cool, kinda like HALO. ;)

Yeah, the OFP hud is alright, but not very realistic..
It's activated no matter who you play as..

Something like the drop command or the titlersc thing could be used, possible?
The hardest part is getting the movement of the enemys :-\
Any ideas?
Even if it's not movement, just with in 100m, would be an amazing start..?

If there was a way to get the targeting thing from the jeepMG and uh60mg, that'd be great. You know, have a little box around an enemy that isn't in the sights, but apply it to all guys infront of you. Target the box and it turns into that star of david thing there... (no offense to Jewish ppl).

I wonder if it can be applied to ppl... :P

Good idea  :D but...  :-\  I think it's a bit hard, especially if you use it all the time... if you have BAS choppers and pilots, you would have probably seen their Visors and NVG goggles.
I mean Utilizing system: "Lower Visor" / "Lower NVG".
You can't use them both the same (in the truth you can...BUG)
And there one important thing to take care of: Moving system.
If you're moving, everything around you seemes to be moving too, even trees or bushes for example... so the Target System would show the as targets !  :o
Thera are two possibilities:  enemies and other soldiers (even your allies) are moving too, following a different road and TARGET ACQUIRING SYSTEM recognizes only different-moving targets so trees are not shown as targets,
OR you have to stop yourself before activating your special HUD, becoming an easy target for snipers...
Ok, I've written something strange and hard...  :-[  :-[  :-[ but this is the ptoblem you have to solve in order to solve Tatrgeting System...

Not entirely sure what you are looking for in a HUD... but it would be a pretty simple task to, say, find the nearest enemy and put a target box around him. But you can only have one target box at a time, unless maybe you do something funky with titlerscs....

60 round mags would be easy as cake to do, just config a mag that has 60 rounds. :) I've always thought those big-ass bannana clips on those AK's looked real funny though... (the ones that look like a "c") Recoil would also be easy to take care of, although most OFP guns have almost zero recoil anyway, so I don't see what else you could ask for. ???

Yeah, we got that already. It's called Kevlar. :P But anyway, armor is another thing that could be easily configged, just by upping a unit's armor in his config. It can also be done via scripting, though it isn't as pretty due to the limit of the setdammage command....

Concerning the body armour, maybe ONYX's talking about the new CRISAT BA (Body Armour  ;D)... I don't know much about it, but i think it's a mix between the standard 18-layer-kevlar and ceramik and steel plates (front & back).

Supposed to stop standard 5,56x45mm and 7,62x51mm NATO but does it really work ? ??? ???

About the kevlar, I heard that the "HALO for OFP" developing team has improved resistence against bullets.  ;)
In a video there is a Marine soldier hit by an AK-74 burst who suffers no real damage... You could ask them some hints about it.  8)

Well, there is an entry in a unit's config for their armor value. I'm sure they just upped that number.
