exact places
« on: 13 Sep 2004, 16:57:35 »
is there a way to move buildings, into exact positions or a way to copy and rotate a lot of building at the same time?

coz it takes me ages to get the building perfectly next to each other, whereas everyone else can do it easy, am i missing something here or wat?

You will need one of the editorupdate addons.

Kegetys version and General Barrons version are both for Resistance.

Gunslingers addon is for thos erunning CWC.

To move several objects in the Editor, simply drag a box round them to select them, then, with the mouse over the group, hold down the left mouse button and drag where you want.

To copy the selected objects just press Ctrl-C, then Ctrl-V will paste a copy of the objects.  Use the drag method outlined above to move them.

You can rotate stuff by selecting them, pressing SHIFT and turning the mouse.

This belongs to General Mission Editing thread.

That's because the center of the editor icon isn't always the center of the building...just accept it and learn the alignment through practice.
I doubt you spend hours aligning them...good practice is:
-go to empty
-go to objects
-select shed
-and again
-Now put them together so that they align into double "garage".
After all is done you'll see what I meant in the first sentence IE. the icons won't be aligned but the sheds in preview will be.
It's just a matter of practice.

#edit:
Oh... and in order to see empty class in editor put a player(yourself) on map.
If you have Kegetys editor upgrade, editor names start with EU building, EUxxx...

Hope this helps...

You can copy/paste in a group of buildings if you want, by using ctrl+c to copy, and ctrl+v to paste then you can rotate the selection by holding ctrl or shift (i forget which one) and click and hold the move button on your mouse (the one which you click and drag to move things on the map) in a circular motion around the centre point of the selection, this should rotate the group that you have selected.

P.S. i hope this is what you were asking

a trick I use, especially for roads/fences....and works for buildings if they are all the same type.....

Make the building layout on desert island with just 2 buildings...
take the time to get them aligned exactly the way you want, unfortuneatly you gotta do this the hard way...
then look at the sqm file, and see what the posistions of the buildings are, 2 vectors should match and the 3rd will be different, roads for example, at least the long road pieces, are 25 apart....
then just create the rest of your buildings "close" to where you want....
then go back to the sqm and manually set the positions

advantages: for long strings of objects like roads and fences, this works very well
also works for "clusters" both n/s and e/w that need to be perfectly aligned
disadvantages:  all the pieces need to be named, believe me, it solves a lot of probs if you do
never tried it with different objects in the same string, as stated elsewhere, everything has a different center

I have also made a blank map on desert, used the above technique to make several different road and fence sections stretching all across the island, then saved it as "roadwork"
now when I need a section of road or fence, I can go there and copy/paste just what I need!

must be another way

There are some good suggestions in this thread about how to make it less painless, but fundamentally there is no other way.

Mission making, like most things, is 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration.
Plenty of reviewed ArmA missions for you to play

I use a mthod of measurement using rectangulat triggers sometimes.

If you want to place certain objects x metres apart, just make a rectangular trigger x metres long in the required direction.

Not 100% accurate, but, accurate enough for a lot of objects.
