Using Music from Red Alert 1 - Legal?
« on: 13 Aug 2004, 12:35:11 »
I'm doing this campaign with one of my mates and we were wondering whether it would be legal to include a track from the original Red Alert in one of our missions. Can we use the whole track or 30 seconds of it or not at all?

You can use it
I'd say
As the game is quite old, the developer won't care

Well, I'm working with a top notch level designer and scripter. Together we're going to be pushing bounderies. Our campagn will feature excellent and dynamic plot, multiple endings, weapon pools, randomness, full voice acting, new music, advanced scripts, polished missions and ace briefings. I tell you, this community is in for a treat.

Don't worry about using the RA music, as long as you put in the credits that you used it then everything is fine, as long as you dont try and use the mission to make money or something and that would be crazzzzzzyy. Even better if you have the CD because then you have bought the rights to it i suppose but go on google and type in 'Red Alert Archive' They have the entire entire soundtrack to download, though the download is innnncredibly slow. What other music are you planning on using? (sorry about the inquisitiveness im just a wannabe sound editor in need of work on ofpec at the moment!!  :-[)

We're gonna be using the first three minuites of Face the Enemy (also from Red Alert) and also maybe track 21 from Mechwarrior 2 but we're finding it quite hard to find no-fee no-roality legal music place atm to get good music from. Do you know anywhere good? Also you say you're in need of work. What kind work sound editing are you thinking of? Perhaps you can help us with our campagn.

It depends on what kind of music you are trying to get. For my music I mainly use Kazaa Lite but that isnt very good at finding music from games because usually games have soundtracks released on seperate CDs. Having to pay shouldnt be a problem because you arent using the copywritten material to make money, and as long as you purchased the music legitimately (which I do  :)) then its ok I've always assumed   ::). The only thing im really good for is finding music thats suitable for the mission and implimenting it once the mission is complete. I have a pretty sizable music collection ranging from Game Soundtracks such as the Unreal Tournament Series and Red Alert to DJ Tiesto and Ferry Corsten to Hans Zimmer so I'm sure to have some music that you would like.

Disregard all suggestions to do this.

We're looking for a rock track for a helicopter attack mission. It should exude action-packedness and I would be cool if it were loopable too.

You are allowed to listen to the music in your computer, stereo or walkman (or equivalent device), since as someone mentioned, you've bought the CD and so you are entitled to listening to it. But pulling the music from the CD and including it in a mission is not legal. Nor is downloading the music from the internet and using it.

The music is copyrighted material, and using it in the fashion you are describing is breaking the copyright law, and we won't have that here at OFPEC.

You can always write to Electronic Arts and ask them permission to include the selected songs in your mission, and explain in what fashion the mission will be used and distributed. It's a longshot, but it is possible that they allow it's usage.

If you should get that permission (explicit written permission), PM me and I will unlock this thread.
