« on: 07 Aug 2004, 02:10:46 »
I have someone doing voice overs for me, can the files be used if they are .wav flies?

Or do they need to be .ogg or .lip for my sounds...

The sounds are ppl voices. :P

I'm almost positive they have to be in .ogg.

But don't take my word for it, ask someone like Macguba or Sui.

If I'm wrong, I'm going to delete a bunch of readme's on how to add voices

Pretty sure you can do WAV's, in fact, if you read some of the tut's, they say WAV's are recommended.

no, cant be .wav. all sound files have 2 be in .ogg to wrk in OFP. Dats why you need to download a sound converter. I personally use Cool Studio and the codec for OGG Vorbis.

But yes u have 2 use the .ogg. >:( Otherwise, if u think about it, BIS would have stuck w/ .wav files in their missions.

tyger is right you need ogg's to do sounds no matter what

if you want lip synch you also need a lip file

like tyger said, there are plenty of programs for doing this - have a poke around the forum for a link

check the tutorials in the ed depot for further info on adding sound

You'll need both if you want to do the speaking stuff properly.

Wavtolip will only convert .wavs into .lip files.

Flashpoint will only recognise .ogg files.

You gotta put the .wav into wavtolip, then convert the .wav into .ogg. Then you can bung them both into your sound folder and use them.

For the record (no pun intended) .wav files are playable in OFP. I've done it and I'm not that smart.  I'll qualify that - mono .wav works, stereo might not (except, perhaps as music).

.wss files are also supported as some of the BIS sounds are in this format.

I have had intermittent problems with playing small sound files in the past so I've used the bigger .wavs as a workaround (though I now think it was my soundcard at fault).

Use .ogg for the compression - high quality helps for voice/music but you can get away with much lower quality (more compression) with radio sounds.  oggdropXPd was a bit of a bugger to get going but it's worth the hassle.

I'd advise against .wav purely to minimise .pbo size and the chance of people not downloading your mission.

well, stero doesn't work in OFP anyway

but you got wavs to work? I tried and ive had very limited success. Most of the time they don't play, and when they do, the volume changes.  :P

No, i did not do anything wrong, either with the description.ext or the sound conversion. I've made plenty of missions w/ sound and i know how to do it.  ::)

but if you wanna try wavs, go for it.

I can confirm the issue with OFP not playing small .ogg files... it was a constant thorn in my side during making a couple of my missions :P

Nothing to do with the soundcard either. I've known of anyone who uses .ogg's at about 10-15kb to get it :P

As far as stereo/mono goes, I always thought OFP would only do sounds/speech in mono, and music in stereo... I could be wrong though ;)

I've never run into any trouble with small .ogg files. I did used to save the .oggs at a low quality setting on some encoding software, I don't recall the name. For ages I wondered why the sound kept slowing down and speeding up. Doh! :P

no, not .oggs i've had trouble with. I meant i couldn't use .wavs in my missions with predictable success.

Why does everyone think ogg's have to be used? I don't understand. ???

Anyway, to clear things up: ofp supports .wav, .ogg and .wss sound formats.

BIS recommends using .wss unless you have a reason to use .ogg, because .wss performs better (less compression). I personally like ogg because you can customise how much you compress the sound. The reason .wav generally isn't used is because the files are uncompressed, and much, much larger. A 5mb mission would be like 15+mb if it used wav instead of ogg or wss sounds. But I also have run into the problem with .ogg files not playing if they are too small, and in these cases, .wss or .wav files are useful.

Now, as far as stereo and mono goes: music and ambient sounds can be stereo. Radio, "playsound" and "say" sounds have to be mono (could be wrong about the playsound though...). I don't know the quality off the top of my head, but there are also different max kbps rates (sound quality) that each group can use.

Ok, I hope that clears up all this confusion....
