Enemy civilians
« on: 30 Jun 2004, 00:22:16 »
Hey, I'm currently working on a campaign but have been having touble with civilians. I can't get them to shoot for some reason. Can anyone tell me how to get civilians to act as soldiers (and not just give me the soldierGfakeC thing). I have tried tons of things, like switching their side to east/res/west in the mission.sqm but nothing. Please help me.

Thx in advance.

A little known fact is that armed civvies will shoot at the side that is unfriendly to resistance.   So if you make Resistance friendly to East, say, then civvies will shoot at West but West will not shoot back.

Should it be ok if I switch the civies to east in the mission.sqm?

You can do it by changing the .sqm, although you have to change the right bit.   However, there isn't any point - the effect is lost next time you save the mission so if you change anything you have to hack the .sqm again.    It's much easier to use Kali's method.

Oh yeah, that too. I would like to have civies fight resistance at some point (multiple rebelling factions that both want the intruders off their island but they both want different things for the future of the island).

It will work for any group and any fake leader so you can make anybody shoot at anybody.    Civvies at civvies, west at west, whatever you like.

I doubt civvies can ever be made to fire automatically at Resistance but if you want to check just make some experiments.

Just tested it, the civies do shoot at res if you group them with one of the men from whoever res are against. This just opened a whole new list of possible missions to me. Thanks a lot to everyone in this topic. I'm going to work on my campaign now. BTW, I'm thinking of submitting my first mission for beta testing soon, so keep a look out on the Missions: Beta testing board. (I'm going on holiday soon so it most likely won't be for a couple of weeks).

since we're talking about ways you can make sides shoot each other i thought id add a little something i found out the other day:

make an empty truck and fill the "cargo" with eastern soldiers using "this moveincargo truck"

make the driver a western person using "this moveindriver truck"

then position a T80 nearby and set the player as any role in the tank except commander

have loads of M-2 machine guns around (or some other destructive devices  ;D) which are set to never fire until the truck is blown up

start the mission and
A)if you are the gunner you will be told to shoot the truck (thus killing your soviet buds) - do so
B)if you are driver then your gunner will shoot the truck

when the truck and passengers are messed up get out of your tank and you will notice something strange:

PEOPLE ON YOUR OWN SIDE TURN ON YOU AND MAKE YOU DEAD!!!

ok, so realistically it makes a bit of sense but it seems a bit funny that you get shot for following orders

so there you go....   :)

enjoy

This is a feature of the game.   If your score drops to a significantly negative level, you become an enemy to everybody including your own squad.    You lose points for shooting your own side.    Higher ranking loons start at a higher level so have to kill more friendlies before this effect kicks in.    If you have killed lots of enemies in the mission then your score is high so you would then have to kill an lot of friendlies before they started shooting back.

You don't need to build a complicated mission to demonstrate this, just create one squad in the mission editor and when the mission starts start shooting your buddies.

You can adjust a unit's score with the command addRating.
