New Damage System for vehicles
« on: 12 Jun 2004, 23:20:54 »
I'm sure by now everyone is familiar with how vehicles become twisted, dark bouncy metal when they are destroyed, maybe there is a new way to simulate vehicle damage.

What I envision is a script that uses eventhandler's to determine what is being fired at a vehicle.  This, would then cause damage to be shown in the particluar area.  I don't see how bullets from an AK-47 can destroy a tank... This capability seems feasible, just shoot a tire and an animation (I think it's an animation) is played that shows the tire deflate.  Could this be used on other parts of the vehicles body, but with a different animation or effect shown?

Why use event handlers?  To determine what is being fired.  I take it a missile is defined differently from a bullet?  A missile would still explode, while a bullet wouldn't.

Now I need to ask some questions:  Can custom area's be created on vehicles, such as tires that could have a new effect?  Is there any interest in this idea?  Could this be implemented as a script, or would it have to be used in conjunction with a new addon?

Edit:  I'll try to clarify what I'm saying, what I wrote above isn't very clear.

Imagine there is a Jeep driving through a city.  A man begin's shooting the vehicle, striking the hood, door, and headlights.  The engine is hit, so the hood rises up infront of the windshield.  The door becomes dented and cracked.  And the headlights become smashed and un-useable.

Hopefully it's easier to understand what I am saying now...

I would love this kind of script!
I hate the twisted pieces of crap that vehicles become. How does a jeep crumple like a soda can in a fist when I hit it with 250 Berreta rounds?

Homefry though, I think missiles aren't configured differently. Its a bigger more visible bullet that makes 1.5 damgae or whatever. I heard something on this. Someone was making a .50 caliber sniper rifle and when the dmage was calculated in the .ccp if it was above a certain number it created a small explosion on impact.
This may just apply to bullets. I have no knowledge of this.

Vehicles need more damage textures. Like apply how the windows crack then break to the whole vehicle except with diff looks. Headlights already go out but hoods popping up and doors being dinged plus engines smoking, hell this could be pretty good. ;D

Yes, I hope something like this catches on, so we can have shootouts without our "soda-can" cars.  ;)

That's what we need then, damage textures like glass?  That would make sense.  For the hood, that's why I suggested the tired, though I'm not sure how that works.  I'll try to find an experianced addonmaker to see what they can do.
