About the Javelin....
« on: 28 May 2004, 06:17:15 »
Ok I've confirmed this with 2 different people (a former Army Ranger and a paratrooper) who have both seen the Javelin in action.  They both tell me that although the Javelin is primarily used to take out enemy tanks, and bunkers, they say that because it uses a sensitive, passive IR seeker, it also has secondary anti-aircraft capability.  Although it is most effective against slower moving aircraft such as attack choppers, and artillery spotters.  They said that you would have to be real lucky to take down a fast mover such as an SU-25.  So this is something to keep in mind if you are planning to make a Javelin anti-tank missile addon.  Even more exciting, one of the guys told me that because the Javelin has such a big warhead (around 20-30 lbs) in theory you could take out multiple choppers with one hit if they were flying close enough in formation.......

You could, in a REAL combat situation, destroy a slow attack aircraft like the Su-25 or A-10 if it was heading at a speed slower the 500 mph, right in front of you, and at a very LOW altitude. Then there is the excellent chance that the rocket will miss, or be dodged by the slow but nimble plane and your position would be compromised and you would have a 20mm round through your skull. Attack a big, slow, stupid tank or a fast but equally stupid helo seems much more attractive then shoting a small target going at 300 mph at least.

There is a video of the Javelin being live fired against a captured Iraqi tank at this link.

http://www.punchbaby.com/clip_cool.htm

scroll down a little ways, it's on the right hand side of the page, and it's titled "Javelin Live Fire VS T72".

click the botton that says "more" and a pop-up will activate with another link that says "click to download".  In the video the T-72 is completely smashed flat into the ground leaving nothing but a smoldering crater....

The MARPAT marines by Earl & Suchy already have a javelin. Its rather powerful as I had a lot of fun testing it.
ALL tanks are destroyed in one hit. Infantry within a 40m radius ( i think ???)  are killed too. The only problem is its such a heavy rocket that you have to aim very far up of your selected target cause the rocket drops like a meter after firing so you can easily blow yourself up. Once it gets going, watch it. I'll give it a try with planes and helis tonight.  ;)

I would rather stick with the AA stinger for air targets, as the javelin is very unweildly and to be careful of being blown up your self its best if your target is not making you position yourself so the ground is close. ::)

I have gotten good at nailing helis (fast flying) with LAWs and RPGs. An AA is better though.

Might be hard for you guys to test it. The MARPAT marines are a 50mb download. (Took me 3.5 hours) :(

i agree the javelin would not be my first choice against flying targets but it is better than nothing when its all youve got to use

plus moreso id like to see the direct fire mode or maybe two separate ammunitions one for top down the other for a direct fire because sometimes you cant hit the thing with top down its too close or you cant safely launch from where your at ive died many times from being too close to a guy launching on the side of a hill
