Skydivers??? Calling All Skydivers!!
« on: 10 May 2004, 11:30:03 »
I'm a keen and current skydiver in New Zealand and for sometime now I've wanted (with no experience at all!)(typical) to create a skydive simulator/game, but known it would take years of study and employment to even get an idea that I have looked at by a game developer. (seriously)

But!....HELLO OpFlashpoint! (A game engine that allows modification)..Next thing is for me to start learning how to mod, script and develop a mod for OFP or OFP2. Thing is, will this game engine allow me to create a new 3D environment off the ground with other mulitplayer gamers?

I'm seeking anyone who has experimented or examined the capability of OFP game engine if it would allow such a group of players to hurl themselves from a aircraft, complete a series of 'docked' (linked) formations with other gamers in freefall, deploy and allow the gamer to fly a proper modern ramair canopy to the ground, repack and go up again! ????

Yes, I've seen and played recently with the skydiver addon..yew..but it's a start i suppose. But Well done all the same.  Didn't know skydivers came with an AK47! Yikes! I only managed to get an aircraft up to 3,500 before it started not liking the altitude. 5,000 would have been nice.

What can we or I do from here?? I've got ideas, but want to see if this OFP game engine is what it's cracked up to be. Yes, I know it's a military game engine, so a civillian modification should be somewhat simple?

Any ideas, suggestions, links to other sites and any pointers would be appreciated.

Blue Skies.

Yeah the "air" in OFP kinda gets "thin" at 5000, but I've only tested at 100,000 and my advice is don't try it.
Helis have absolutly no control and planes just end up in the ground automatically, kinda weird. ???

Well there will be a limit for height, planes won't like it. This is mainly a ground game with low flying aircraft but....
 :)

I'm not sure on a new 3d enviroment, sky is sky and the engine can't be changed. Once planes that you can walk around in which I think are already done are out a skydiver thing would look good, but currently(not sure once again :P) You sit in seats and hit eject and out you go.

There could be a script made to make formations. Players linking up maybe. A tank tow script could be altered to do what you wanted. I think there are chutes out there that can be steered.(I hate landing in the water.) HALO scripts would interest you too. My main gripe is when freefalling you have just about no control, your head goes down and thats it. You flail like your head is made of lead and down you go. ::)

The engine is weird I dropped like 1,000 feet before and kinda made the ground "bend" and I stood up, no injuries, and a full load in my pants(J/K).  ;D

BTW,
Code: [Select]
removeallweapons this in a units INIT field removes it's weapon :P

Yeah, I've had a few times jumping out, and landing in the groud, and sliding about a lot.. Weird/fun that is :P

Anyway, you could make a flat object (Look for tutorials on O2), and texture it, and place it high up, under the plane..?

Thanks guys for your replies. Still thinking bout how I'm going to get the entire picture of how I want the skydivers, canopies and the jump routine to look first - THEN start to learn to use all the scriptings, addons, Use of 02, modelling and everything else to make this happen! somehow. Cheers.

Still need more ideas about where I should really start I suppose?

Maybe a decent plane for jumping from
Then a steerable parachute
Then I guess working out of the rest of the scripts, and the view out the door..
This could be really fun :)

Cheers Ben.

To be honest, i've never even made an addon in my life! so, I'm starting right from the word go. Luckily i'm not making an entire mod, just some addons with the capability to skydive! Seems I'm not making much headway with the altitude either. Seems I'm really only pushing 6-7,000 feet max. But this is still giving me 60 seconds freefall - this is about 20 seconds more than a real skydive from 10,000 feet.

Another day, another dollar ahead.

Have a great day!
