Patrol Prob...
« on: 22 Apr 2004, 22:26:53 »
Greets all.
I have a problem that i know must have a simple solution but i cant find it.
I want 2 small squads to patrol opposite sides of a road (gr1 & gr1a).
On a trigger i want them to form up into 1 squad (gr1) and start a new patrol line (seek & destroy) in, Fire at will, Limited, Aware, mode. Now ive tried triggers attached to waypoints (join & lead), but its not working for me.
I have worked out one way, where i create 3 squads,  sending 2 squads on their patrol, leaving the third (an officer) at some spot and attached the triger to a waypoint which sends him (officer) on a (Join an Lead), waypoint to each of the 2 squads, that seemed to work but was slow and clumsy. I also tried a groupjoin  command  (gr1a join gr1)  on the trigger but either i cant do that or i put in a bum command. Any suggestions??
Thanks.

i'm not comnpletely sure if understand your prob correctly so let me repeat it in my words to be sure i have the right look on it.

You have 2 groups, each patrolling a side of a road. At certain circumstances (thats whats the trigger for, i guess) you want them to join each other and go for search and destroy route.

First of all, make sure the final big group will not have more than 12 units in it.
Then, let us start with the road patrol. Make waypoints as you want them to patrol, make the last one a cycle waypoint and drag this one close to the first waypoint they have. This will make the groups patrol the road.

Now for the join up:
First, make a trigger, type switch, and condition whatever it needs (eg one side detected by other side). Synchronize this trigger with the cycle waypoint of both groups!
After this, you can add a Join and lead to one group, and a join waypoint to the other group. These 2 waypoints you have also to synchronize with each other.

When done so far, you can add more waypoints to the group which you selected as leading group.

btw, sync things works the same way as grouping units. Select Synchronize (F5) and drag a line from one item to the other.

Now again in short terms:
- sync the cycle waypoints of both groups with the switch trigger.
- sync the Join and lead with the Join waypoint.

If i'm not completely wrong, this should work.

What myke13021 said should work, but in case it doesn't, you should be able to use the join command, like you tried before. However, you are using the command wrong:

You are doing:
   groupA join groupB

What you need to do:
    [array of units] join groupB

So it should look like this:
   units gr1a join gr1

units gr1a creates an array containing all the members of the group gr1a.

Thank you for the reply.
First, can you please explain this,.....-Quote.. These 2 waypoints you have also to synchronize with each other...endquote.... synch 2 waypoints how??...
I had tried a very similar prtocedure, as in to sync the switch/triger to the Cycle waypoint (yes i did have the squad, (4 man.) on a Waypoint patrol with a cycle) but the squad seemed to halt when arriving at the waypoint previous to cycle waypoint, and just remain there, also the, join and lead  / join waipoints seemed not to work. I figured this was because the Cycle waypoint was somehow invisible to them on account it had not been trigered. i then tried putting in a second cycle WP, but of course this didnt work, and ive read  about the reason for this.
What i was really looking to do is perhaps add a command or snippit tho the triggers init, Specifying that gr1a   join gr1  on activation?  is that possible? and will that work, ?
Thanks again.

No problem. Once you created the waypoints, select "Synchronize" from the menu at top. Then, drag a line from the Join and lead waypoint from the first group to the Join waypoint of the other group.
This way each group knows, they have to wait there untill the other group has arrived. Of course you'll have to make sure these waypoints are very close together.

Do the same sync thing with the Switch trigger and the cycle waypoints.

I made a little Mission to show how this all would look like.

I putted 2 Groups inside it, each patrolling it's own area in Careless mode.
By a switch trigger (in this example triggered by Radio Alpha...just press 0-0-1 to activate) they switch to Combat, join each other and continue its way to a new Seek and Destroy waypoint.

Thanks myke.
I looked at how that works in editor, its so simple i feel silly.
Im still having probs with some aspects of the mission, but i think you fixed this particular prob.
I tried the Command Barron gave me but i still had probs , more due to my ignorance i beleive.
What i need is a mentor, a sensei,  LOL, look for a Position Vacant add in the General section.

I feel with you NoMaD...when i'm making maps and i encounter some probs, i could cry when someone tells me how easy it can be solved.

However, if you have more probs, just put a thread in here. Everyone who knows an answer will give it to you, helping you to complete your map.

Good luck, mate

Where can i enlist for this vacant position?  ;D

Well.
I am an Aussie, i belong to a Mechwarrior4 clan, have done for last 8 years.
MW4 is dead, and no MW5. Added to that a couple of the guys in the clan had a great interest in OFP, i bought the game , enjoyed it and love the editor. Most of the Guys  Smoke Jaguar,  SJ-- are yanks, an a bunch of fags to boot, but  we enjoy gaming together we run Coms servers etc.. I get lots of time in the evening, and have had a keen interest in war an tactics, have had  since i was a kid.
The editor allows me to 1 indulge my tactical skills, 2- present a realistic situation, or to simply recreate an old engagement.
Im keen to become proficient  in editing. Ive spent months reading Tuts etc, lots of tuts, on everything from basic editor, to  WP, Trigers, Scripts, lots of shit.
And i spend lots time testing.
I beleive that i can produce a good STANDARD EDITOR mission, I find these unrefined and to a big extent unrealistic. Learning the next step is obviously scripting etc. I cant    ive tried over the years, we just dont mix, ohh im familiar enough on how they work  i can even edit some, but i dont fully understand scripting.
Some help  any would always be apreciated.

i agree with sim...but there are a few others good tutorials too  ;D

Basically i suggest you get the unoff Command Reference and take some time to just read through so you've seen all the commands.

Then, start to make a mission. Don't think "what can i do with the editor"...think instead "what mission would i make". Then start making your mission. Once you'll get to a point where you want something to happen (or not happen ;)) where you would need of scripting. When reaching this point, look out for some tutorials about this specific problem. Try, if you find some commands in the Command reference...most are well explained with syntax examples.

Never try to "just learn scripting"...just learn what you actually need to know...with the time you'll get more and more knowledge.

And whenever you get to a point where you feel completely lost, come in here and ask...there's surely always someone who could answer your questions. And a lot will take the time to make tested or untested examples (like my example mission i made only for you  ;D)

No one was able to write perfect scripts right at the start, everyone had to learn more or less slowly (i was more slowly) but you'll get better, and sooner as you think, you'll write your own scripts in no time.
