Hi I'm Looking For an M4 for V1.87, preferably with a Red Dot Scope, but im not really fussed about the scope.

If any one looking at this has one or knows of any good sights for one the post a reply.

1.87 ? You should upgrade to 1.91, it's the last truly official patch. You probably should also get the 1.96 RC patch. Then get Earl & Suchey's Marine Assault pack, it contains a large variety of high-quality weapons.

I feel Silly asking. If not then thank you for the addvice, I'v tryed to update to 1.90 or V1.91 cannot remember, but it says ther are errors in specifec res addons and missions.

When installing or upgrading OFP, I get CRC/checksum errors on PBO or other OFP files!
Many people have had this problem. OFP player Robbel recently reported this problem to Codemasters support. They suggested, for starters, that he

Clean out the WINDOWS TEMP subdirectory.
Run the SCANDISK utility.
Do a hard drive defragmentation before going anything further, including updating bios or driver versions.
OFP player SirWili says make sure that your system is completely clean of viruses. After discovering his system was infected, he removed the viruses and OFP no longer reported checksum errors.

After you perform the above preliminary steps, make sure that your system's BIOS program, chipset (especially the VIA chipset), graphics, sound and mouse drivers are up-to-date.

Been there? Done that? Some players found that the solution was to copy the original file (e.g., 1985.PBO, SOUND.PBO and others) from their OFP installation CD into the appropriate OFP subdirectory and retry installing the patch. Some people succeeded this way on the first try, others succeed only after retrying this 5 and even 15 times over. Go figure!

Other players have done even stranger things to succeed in installing or upgrading OFP. For example, some CD burner utilities, such as EZ-CD Creator, NeroBurn and especially CloneCD, have been known to cause problems when installing, upgrading and playing OFP. They may even incorrectly overlay your system's ASPI layer, according to some reports. If true, this could explain the CRC/checksum errors you are getting.

After going through all of the above and still not having any luck, OFP player Chris finally got things to work by changing his BIOS program's RAM speed setting from 133 to 100, rebooting and only then installing and upgrading OFP. Worked like a charm, says Chris. Just remember to reset the RAM speed back to 133 after you're done.

O.K lost you there, umm will try copeing the files from CD to Hard drive, because it is simple to do, last time i tryed messing around with my computer i blew it up, and others stopped running all together.

redownloading OFP upgrade, Cannot understand why it did not work first time, my cuson downloaded it and worked fine?

Pretty sure that was the 1.3 upgrade...same one as the Aug and G36.

XM-177 just doesn't cut it, though, when there are actual M-4s out there

BTW, you need to dig around in the MARPAT readme a little bit to find all the slick weapons - some of them aren't in the default loadouts.

So the XM177 E2 isn't the M4? I always thought that it was suspicious. But isn't XM for experimental weapons and if its used by a NATO force shouldn't it be M177?
I think the M4 has a much higher firing rate too.

AFAIK the XM-177 was the earliest "shorty" M16 used by American SF in Vietnam.  You can tell an XM-177 from a CAR-15 by the length of the barrel past the front sights - as you can see, the XM-177 is much shorter.

As for the designation, I think it stayed XM because it never became standard issue - the CAR15 took over that role (automatic carbine).

As for the history of the whole family of rifles, it goes something like this...

AR-10 -> AR-15 -> M-16 -> M-16A1 -> M-16A2 -> M16-A3/A4

AR-15 also -> XM-177 -> Colt "Commando"

AR-15 also -> CAR-15 -> M-4 (adopted 1994) -> M4-A1

The SR-25 is also from the M-16 bloodline - it comes full-circle in that it is most like the AR-10, at least in caliber (7.62mm).

More recently, M4-A1 -> HKM4 (H&K did some upgrade work and the results are as usual great)

Then you have the Colt models 633 and 635, which are essentially Colt Commandos chambered for 9mm Parabellum.

On Metal Gear Solid SOL the M4 had a long barrel in front of the sights, longer than the XM-177e2.

As for that family tree, that's intersting that so many three comapnies made almost the same weapon, wouldn't they compete for contracts and sue over patents? Or maybe those patents wore off (17 years).

Well I believe it was Eugene Stoner who came up with the AR-10, but Armalite actually started building them, which then got bought by Colt, who licenses to FN and Bushmaster, I think...not sure, but the prod rights to the weapon have certainly changed hands quite a bit.

I'll try and dig that info up.

K, here we go...

Stoner worked for Armalite and designed the AR-10.  1957, the Army asks Armalite for a 5.56mm auto rifle and thus is born the AR-15.  1960, Stoner leaves Armalite and joins Colt - Armalite doesn't like the way development is going and sell the design to Colt around the same time.

1988, the US division of FN becomes the primary DoD contractor for the M16.

Now, Armalite apparantly still builds them, as well as FN, Bushmaster, Diemaco (under license) and a bunch of others, but Colt is the one who sold the designs to them.

So from 1960 on, the whole M16 family is primarily the property of Colt, but Colt only makes them now for civil and law-enforcement markets.

i was issued an FN model M16A2 when i was in the army, though i would have rather had a colt ;D

we got the M4's as i left they looked pretty sweet
