Controlling Wind Direction?
« on: 31 Mar 2004, 15:17:21 »
I have an outro that ends with the shot of a flag and the sun behind it. So far I have been at the mercy of the environment when it comes to the wind blowing the flag in the right direction. Some times it's in frame. Other times it's off to the left.
So, Is there a way to control the direction a flag is blowing so that it ALWAYS is going in the same direction?
Along that same line of thought. I would like to use smoke in one of my cut scenes. It's a filming trick used by Hollywood all the time. But if I can't get the smoke to blow in the same direction reliably, then it is of almost no use. Any ideas here?

Thanks
Calamity.

PS.
I know I've seen posts about "Wind" Before, but a quick search with "Wind" and "Control", or "Direction" did not produce anything useful. So, sorry to be asking the same questions again.

Umm.. Since nobody else is man enough to say it I will.

There is no way to control the wind.
Not all is lost.

Ah Crap...

I though that may be the answer. At least with the flag I did. I was hoping I could create a smoke puff and give it a set velocity or something....

Oh well

Calamity out.

Best way I can thing is just zoom the camera out a bit, so you can see it from any direction..
Or make the camera spin round the flag :)
That would look cool

But saddly, no one has found a way to control the wind direction..

you could ask the FDF mod how they got the flag in their menu screen mission to always face the same direction

Hi Guys...
My first post and not much of a contribution, but here goes...

I came across mention of smoke/wind direction while fooling with this script...
------------------------------------------------
Script Name : SmokecamouV1.sqs

Script Author : CHARON (mail@xeno-morph.de)
Script Version: Version 1.0
------------------------------------------------
Which I picked up somewhere on the editing depot...

This is what CHARON says about this section of his script...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Script Invokation: [Object,"wind-direction","SmokeColour"] exec "SmokecamouV1.sqs"

where object is the name of the object and "wind-direction" is a string that contains the direction
the wind is coming (!) from, so the shells are placed slightly into that direction
Valid strings are : "NORTH", "SOUTH","WEST","EAST",
                    "NORTHEAST","NORTHWEST","SOUTHEAST" and "SOUTHWEST"
Note that the wind-direction can change sometimes after a couple of played missions.
Did not find any global variable that contains the wind-direction. If someone does feel
free to contact me."" ------------------

Wind direction command seems to work here most of the time for me... haven't tried it with flags though.... might be worth trying...

Guess that's all.... hope it helps a bit...
Just wait till I start asking stoopid Noob questions.... :-\

Hmmm.... haven't tried this myself, but I have heard that it's possibly to control how the flag furls by rotating the flagpole...

Give it a go ;)

rotating da flagpole doesnt wrk 4 me. ive tried bunches of times, but i cant get it 2 work. what i found though is if u make full sunny sky in weather the wind usually is less.

but flat out - u cant play with wind. its da same way w paras when they all over hel* :P
