Complex Bases
« on: 04 Mar 2004, 22:40:32 »
I have seen in many missions very comlex bases where objects overlap, table and ammocrates have been in tents and fortifications, and wondered how they did it.  Is there any way in the game to do it or what is it, because it seems like it would take hours to create it?

Thx

I am also a newbie,  ;D all you have to do to get things inside tents/ forts is place them on the map very close to/on top of the object you want it inside. It usually takes a while (for me) to get it in the exact place you want it.
also i think u can use the setpos command for more advanced positioning

Yep, if you just want to put an ammocrate inside a tent, it's a matter of putting the tent down and putting the ammocrate on top of it, then previewing to see if it's where you want it.  You'll probably need to move it around a little to get it just right, but that's all there is to it.

Now, to put guys in watchtowers or put radios on top of tables, you'd need to use the setpos command.

It does take hours and hours to create.    As with so much of life, there is no secret shortcut.    Place the object, Preview, adjust it by an inch, Preview, repeat till it's right.   It's dull work but it does make a tremendous difference the feel of a mission.

I've found that it's not worth spending a lot of time on this near the start of the mission design process.    You find you have to move things, change the base design and so on as the mission develops.    It's also well worth experimenting just roughly first.    Leave the pure eyecandy and precise placement until the mission is nearly finished.

Some of the icons on the mission editor map are downright unhelpful:  it is not always the case that the middle of the icon is where the middle of the object will be.

Edit: use General Barron's editor addon (in the Editors Depot - pending) to unlock hidden objects.

One trick I use is I have made a "dummy" mission on desert, and thats where I do the intricate work of object placement.  I have made roads, fencelines, tables etc and then when I need that effect for a new map I can cut and paste.
Roads and fences are especially tedious to make, so I made a road and fence much longer then I could ever need in a "real" mission.
Whenever I need some new effect I just load up my dummy mission and do the work there before attempting to use it in a mission.  I also use this dummy mission to test other concepts like switchmoves, createunit, camera effect and really any map design or script idea.
It is my hope that the objects will be more "actual" sized in the editor for OFP2.

Is there anywhere you can download premade bases you can merge into your mission?

Cheers
