« on: 16 Feb 2004, 23:15:33 »
Hi I am very new to this Editing however, Ihave realised a potential in it. I am a Military Instructor in the British Army and am interested in making lessons using the Editor. However i do not know where to start, can anyone please advise. I will be looking to use artillery and tanks and inf and would also like to put my own text on the screen and sound ie Voice. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

For artillery check out the Chain Of Command's Unified Artillery addon:

http://www.main.thechainofcommand.net/

In fact the CoC command engine might also be of interest to you, depending on what you wanted to do.

The CoC mod will interest you very much and you should check it out at once.   However, it does not pretend to provide an introduction to mission editing.   Also check out snYpir's MP/SP support pack, also available in the Editors Depot.

The place to start is the Editors Depot - Getting Started.    Start with snYpir's OFPEC guide: mission editing and also my own mission editing for beginners which was written specifically for people in your situation.    There are many other good tutorials of course, but these are the best place to start.   The Tutorial Mission gives you a working example of a simple, complete mission with all the bits that you need to make a mission.

However the critical thing is to open up the mission editor and play.    Just have fun placing units with waypoints and a few simple triggers.

When (not "If") you get stuck post questions here:  all we ask is that you use the Editors Depot tutorials, the forum search function and the FAQ first.    ;)    If you can't find what you need, or if in doubt, post a question here.   :)

Several armies (including for example the Australians) already use versions of OFP in training, though I don't know the details.

Putting text on screen can be done in various ways and is very easy.     Creating your own sound files is slightly more complicated but is not difficult.

Most people find OFP editing slightly overwhelming at first because there is so much to absorb at the beginning.   However, once you have come to grips with the underlying concepts - which isn't difficult - the basics fall into place very quickly.
Plenty of reviewed ArmA missions for you to play

I am Ex Brit Military

I dont know how experienced a player your are in OFP or what type of lesson plan you are wanting to use this as an aid for

If you are wanting to teach any of the following

1) Section Formations
2) Target indication
3) Arcs of fire
4) Fibua
5) Obstacle crossing
6) Pepper Potting
7) Hell even basic map reading by looking at Reference points or contours
8) Convoy Drills
9) Ambush drills / or Ambushes
10) Recce Patrols
11) Fighting Patrols

It can do the lot for you

Basically you can approach it from 3 different aspects

1) Your Example, would be a cutscene, which is basically a film with AI soldiers carrying out the various movements required

2) Practice, could be all your recruits networked together carrying out a cooperative mission (Your team against AI)

4) End test could be Team A against Team B, all human players

Do you have the use of a LAN network of computers that can run OFP

or is it simply a standalone which is going to be used as a visual aid

Give me some more insight into what you want, how much time you have to prepare it, what free time you have online etc etc etc

and what level of soldiers are you training
Is this a
1) Recruit
2) Cadre
3) Section Commanders course
4) Sgts course etc etc etc

(You will have to excuse me i came out in 94 and forgotten the correct terminology)

This sounds like a worthwhile Project
Providing you are not under pressure to get a lesson plan created in a few weeks, it can all be done to quite a high standard
