some editing questions
« on: 22 Jan 2004, 07:16:49 »
I know your going to think some of these questions are easy, I try to figure it out but I cant.

1.When in the editor I select myself a waypoint so that when I play it will show where to go, but when I preview there's no waypoint thing showing where to go and how far it is. Please tell me if I'm doing something wrong.

2.How do you put downloaded EDITOR EXTRAS in the game.

3.I cant figure out how to use the talk waypoint, I've tried with tutorials and the manual and stuff, but it wont work. So can you please tell me how.

4.I know your going to think this is easy, but how do the timed triggers work.

      I'm a NEWBIE with a deadline.........please help

ok,
1. u have to first play a mission from the singleplayer missions or campaign so that the waypoint will show up in game when ur previewing ur mission in the editor. i have no idea why this happens but thats how it works for me

2.if u mean editor extras from ofp.cz put them in ofp\users\yourname\missions and open them in the editor

3.Unfortunately, i never tried the talk waypoint or tried to find a tute about it

4.when u make a trigger u will see two options, timeout and countdown
Timeout e.g lets say put 30 second in the boxes (there are 3 boxes, all should be the same) then the trigger wont activate until 30 seconds have passed from the beginning of the game
Coundown e.g lets say u put 30 sec again ,that means that the trigger will activate 30 seconds after a unit "steps into the trigger"

hope that helped :)

This happens, because your campaign or singleplayer mode
is set to cadet-mode. The mission editor by default starts
in veteran-mode. Once done, you enter the mission editor
in cadet-mode. ;)

I've never used Talk, but I think it's a bit like Destroy - you attach it to another unit.     Except when your group gets there they chat rather than wreck.    Perhaps you could think of it as "go to that unit but don't destroy it".

There are at least six ways to learn about stuff you don't know:-

- tutorials
- FAQ
- forum search function
- unpboing missions (especially official ones)
- experimenting in the mission editor
- posting a question

4.  Time boxes.   I'm not convinced that the answer above is entirely accurate.   My understanding of how they work is as follows.

You don't need to put the same time in each one .... the boxes are for minimum, maximum and middle times so put in approriate times (in seconds) accordingly.

Timeout - the trigger will activate that length of time after the activation box/conditions have been met.

So if it's east present and 30   90    60  seconds, then the consequences of the trigger will happen between 30 and 90 seconds after the first east loon steps into the trigger area.

Countdown - the condition must be met for that time before the trigger will activate.   I suspect you may have to put the same time in all three boxes for this one.

For example, if it's east present and 40s then east units have to be in the trigger area for 40s before the trigger will fire.

In waypoints there is a field called countdown which actually operates the same way as Timeout.   How confusing is that.

Sry mac.. You're a bit off with these...
If you want the trigger to 'trig' within the same time everytime, use the same time in all boxes. If a random time is wanted then vary the timings...
Quote from the Prima's Official OFP Strategy Guide:

"Countdown starts a timer when a condition is met until the trigger is actually activated, and Timeout requires the condition to be met for a certain amount of time.
Vary these times by entering a Minimum time, Middle time and Maximum time. The AI chooses a time between the Min and Max, but somewhere near the Middle. To set a specific time, insert the same time in each box."

So...

Quote
Timeout - the trigger will activate that length of time after the activation box/conditions have been met.
Nope... The trigger will be activated only if the certain condition is true the amount of time specified in the time boxes, i.e. if there's a dude who activates the trigger and the trigger is set to timeout 10,10,10 the dude has to be inside the trigger area for that 10 secs before the trigger 'trigs'...

Quote
Countdown - the condition must be met for that time before the trigger will activate.  I suspect you may have to put the same time in all three boxes for this one.
Nope... This is what the timeout does...  And no, you don't need to put the same time in each box for this... Read the above...
Countdown makes the trigger activate after the specified time has passed since the condition was met... So if again we have a dude who 'trigs' the trigger and the triggers countdown 10,40,25 the trigger will activate somewhere between 10-40 secs after the dude has 'trigged' trigger... And the dude does not have to be in the trigger anymore...
So countdown is like a timed explosive: you set the time, activate it and wait for it to blow...

This is true... I think BIS forgot to change the Timeout text to Countdow or Wait  :)

As for that Talk waypoint... I remember using it back in 1.30 days... Don't remember what it did though...
Here's again a quote from the Prima's Strategy Guide:

"This is a special waypoint - more useful in cutscenes than in missions. Place it over another unit (usually a friendly one). The waypoint is completed when the group reaches the target unit's position."

So you got that right mac...  :D :P ;)
