Hey guys, this is probaly a dumb question but the aircraft always seem to ignore the enemy troops.

every unit has a threat model included in it's config.cpp which gives proirity between Air, Armored, and Soft (or infantry) targets.

the one for planes gives little or no priority to infantry targets, so it is highly unlikely they will waste ammo on ground units ;)

Kaliyuga pretty much hit the nail on the head.

As we all now that armies usually like to dress in camoflague, which makes it especially difficult to spot troops from above.
Besides, planes can't always spot infantry going at 400-700mph or whatever it is.

Besides, planes and helis nowadays usually provide anti-armor support so they aren't to concerned with foot soldiers, from my knowledge, anyway.

Anyway, this is just a third opinion.

It is possible to use a chooper to provide anti-personnel air support, but it won't be very effective.  Just place a seek and destroy waypoint over where then enemies will be.  Set the chopper's skill level all the way to the right (or close to it) and try it out.  The chopper will usually need to make several passes before it locates troops to attack.  As Kaliyuga said, the chopper doesn't care much about infantry, and if enemy vihicle is in the area, it will target that instead.

Wouldn't reveal command help in this, or does the chopper/air units in general still ignore soft targets? Or by setting the chopper fly low enough?

I always thought that the threat model was made so that if there's no NME present which has the highest threat the unit moves to scan for the next highest threat and so on... Eventually scanning for infantry as well...  ???

I remember making a mission back in the 1.46 days in which I was constantly getting wupped by an NME Mi-24 (and player was infantry)... And I think I had the chopper fly below 50...

There's a thread about this kicking around on this board, have a search - it was only a couple of days ago.
Plenty of reviewed ArmA missions for you to play

I was having the same problem with helo's.  The thread in question is:

http://www.ofpec.com/yabbse/index.php?board=6;action=display;threadid=14814

It includes a nice little script written by Bizon for getting choppers to provide reasonable CAS and a bit of a pow-wow about the reasons it's tough to get them to.  I'm sure he'd be okay with you using the script (if in doubt, pm him).  Use the last version put up there and just check it, iirc there's a typo in it somewhere.  loonsleft_ instead of _loonsleft at one point, something like that.  And keep the choppers flyinheight nice and low.
