Problem AI Firing Cannon in Bunker HELP
« on: 15 Oct 2003, 00:45:35 »
If anyone could help I placed a M46 Field Gun in a bunker (LARGE RAISED BLOCKHOUSE) and then I put a Abrams (west with no fuel and no ammo) right in front about 100 meters away and the AI soldier won't fire at it even if I'm squad leader and tell him to target it .I even tried all of the radio commands .I forgot to that the cannon was empty and in the soldiers init field I put (this assignasgunner m46gun1 ; this moveingunner m46gun1) and then I put a officer on top of the bunker and in his init field I put (removeallweapons this ; this addweapon "binocular" ; this setunitpos "UP" ; this disableai "MOVE" ; this selectweapon "binocular") I also had him facing in the Abrams direction but still nothing. I have the spectator script so I seen that the gunner could see the target and even had the yellow brackets around it but still not firing and the Officer is telling him to and all he says is "I'm on him" or something like that.

I know this is kinda long if somebody could help I would appreciate very much cause I want to do this for a mission I'm making .

NOTE I left out the part in the init field's of both soldiers where I just basically put :(this setpos [(blah),(blah),Blah] where I just positioned them in the bunker and on top of the bunker.

Well I'm no expert on this but...

Some addons don't allow for AI soldiers to shoot out of them. Another example is the sandbags that come standard with OFP. No soldiers positioned behind a sandbag wall can fire over them, they really are just for decoration it seems.

Just as a test, reduce the bunker's armour to 0. Just like with the sandbags, if you reduce them to 0 armour you can now shoot over them (although they look silly all blown up).

It is a problem with the fire and geometry LODs of the bunker, the AI thinks there is a big wall that they can't shoot through in front of them. Try to find a bunker with out the problem, or an addon that has the gun allready in the bunker... and SpecOps: the only reason AI can shoot over "dead" sandbags is because when the collapse the fire LOD becomes smaller, doing that to the bunker would cause it t collapse as well, and it's not a pretty sight...

I think I found out what the problem is unless the gun is on the groun it won't fire I don't know why this is but I just tested this out and it worked perfectly on the ground but as soon as I took it off the ground slightly it wouldn't fire even when it's just floating in mid air on desert island with a group of Abrams right in front of  it (FULL Crew but no ammo and no fuel so I could test it) .
I even used a smaller bunker and put the cannon inside it and as long as it was on the ground (and I adjusted the height of the bunker so it wouldn't block view) it kept firing away.this even does this with the M198 Cannon and the KORD and alot of others. So know I'm really confused I'm currently trying to learn about config.cpp files so that I can adjust some things and see if that fixes anything.
Maybe if theres a way to keep the soldier on the ground but still be in the cannon as a gunner (since it's in a bunker anyway nobody would see and I could put a another soldier there that if shot would kill the gunner to to simulate the gunner being shot. If anyone knows why this is maybe a addon maker it seems to be with most of these types of artillery addons.
THANKS

not without changing the p3d file... Anyway I find that odd, fixed MGs always work at different heights for me. I even used he VITAPC pack KORD and setposed it up on a castle wall... It works fine... may I ask, what version of OFP do you have? Not that it might make a difference but still.... And still the best idea for you is to make an addon request or try youreslf to combine the gun with the bunker... and since its all one object AI will shoot trough it like there is nothing there at all (even through the walls if it doesn't have la imited turning radius)

I sorry for delay emergency anyway I have 1.91 but that problem with the KORD was a while ago in a similar situation but this newer KORD doesn't seem to have that problem . This M46Fieldgun still doesn't fire when off the ground a few I found out it will fire if far enough away from target but does that mean if somehow a tank gets to close the cannons would be useless? I'm not talking a few meters neither I'm talking about if its a 100 away it won't fire! I've tried to fool around with the config.cpp file but have not any luck cause I don't really know alot about addons and how they made but that Idea about making a addon with the bunker sounds great .I want to make my own cannon based on one in real life in my own bunker but are afraid that's a long way off .Anyway thanks
