A stupid little question about ammo crates

How do you find out what's in an ammo crate?

I tried

hint format ["%1", magazines crate1]

but it just returned

[]

which was no good.   It works fine if you try it on the player.   Same with "weapons" rather than "magazines". Tried searching the FAQ and the forum but no joy.      I've got to be missing something obvious here.  Anybody got any suggestions?

 Not positive but could it have to do with the fact that  when you add ammo/weapons into a crate/vehicle you have to use:

addweaponcargo/addmagazinecargo

instead of the standard :

addweapon/addmagazine  

hint format ["%1", magazinecargo crate1]

lol it's not even a real  mission question ... I just want to know exactly what's in all the BIS default ammo crates, of which there are about 10.   And finding it out one thing at a time is just sooooo dull and boring.
