Heightmap pixels=Mapsize?...

Every tutorial I've seen says to make the heightmaps 256x256 pixels, why is this?. Is there a direct relation in pixel to map size? I've made a heightmap 512x512 pixels and loaded it into visitor as a 256x256 map, so why do they ALL say use 256? Are they all copied from the same source of info verbatem, or is there a special reason?...

The main reason for asking is that 256x256 is quite a small map. I want to make a 512x512square unit map, should I use a 512x512 heightmap?...

If it makes no difference, why not use more pixels and make it easier to create detail on you/our heightmaps?...

quick answer... all BIS maps are 12,8x12,8 km and as there is a hight point every 50m
it makes it 256x256 ...

12.8x12.8 km.. just less water around islans than the other maps.. BUT Res handles
larger maps..  

and if you read in the BIS visitor tutorial, they put it like this

Note that even though Visitor can handle terrains of any size, OFP only accepts square shaped islands, and the size also must be in powers of 2 (so valid ones would be 128x128, 256x256 or 512x512 for example). Also remember that the larger the island, the more memory it requires.

So as long you make it square and even you can get it to work ..
