How do you change the side of a unit during a mission

I'm trying to set a group of civilians as friendly to east and enemy to west.
All I can find is reference to ?side as a means of find what side they are on and it does not seem to have the ability to say e.g. man3 = side "east".
Help!

Go into the Mission.sqm file, locate the civilians whose side you wish to change and change the side from "CIV" to "EAST" (or "GUER" if you have set Resistance friendly to East). That way the Americans will shoot 'em with impunity.
