Domino Effect.
« on: 24 Aug 2003, 04:11:20 »
Now, I do not know if anyone has encountered this when editting, then testing their missions. The waypoint "Domino Effect" You approach one or get 500m to a waypoint..then all of a sudden the others go off, and one is left which is the last waypoint. What is causing it, and how can I prevent this. I should not have to lock every waypoint.

First Waypoint is ok..which is 1000m (but that one is unlocked after another group reaches their waypoint), then the next one is about 1000m and when I reach 600m it goes off..effecting the others, which are about another 1000m and they are all "move" waypoints.

I do not really have a clue, what can be causing this

If you could probably attach the mission here hope there
are no addons/custom soundfiles, (and what else would make
it to big/complicated to have a quick look),

then i could have a look for it.

Only thing is, i need some time to get home from my work,
until i can do it (1 or 2 hours from now)

I actually ran into something similar a long time ago.  If these waypoints are for the player's group (not ai), then the best thing to do is to not have any.  If someone is playing in veteran mode then they won't see them anyway.  And you shouldn't tie specific objectives to waypoints because there is no guarantee that someone else would go to them, especially if they can't see them.

deaddog, it's true what you're saying,

but i would rather like to solve problems or find
out the reason why it exists, than ignoring them
or trying a workaround.

If this problem exists, then it must have a reason,
and if it exists for a player group, then it can also
happen to non-player groups and then there's nomore
workaround.

Yeah, there would still be the workaround by doing
all movements the scripted way, but where a problem
is, there must be a solution (at least a reason for the
problem must be there).

And i'd like to know at least about the reason here,
so that this will not be a sleeping prob just waiting
for the next guys to run into  ;)

I did a lot of thinking anyway about this Domino effect of waypoints. In real life we do not see the (yellow sqaure box) waypoints like "go to bed" or "Pick up Phone", "Go to Car" and so on and move waypoints. So, yeah...Be nice to have the problem fixed (correct solution), and also not have waypoints at all. I want a more realistic mission for players anyway. But thinking....will they (players) alter the mission play by doing other objectives first, then messing it up, the way the mission is designed?

lol VisciousDog,

this is where it comes to well thought mission design

If you want to keep the players on a story line, then
you have to design the mission that way.

If you have some guys standing around, then you always
have to think about what happens if......

I for myself let enemies be prepared that players do
not follow the story line, therefore there's the OR
statement when it comes to conditions in triggers or scripts.

But again i say, if it can happen to players, there's no reason
why it shouldn't happen to ai's aswell. (i mean the waypoint
problem now)

A well- constructed - and I mean a really well constructed - mission will stand up to any sort of abuse that the player throws at it.      Shooting people he is supposed to talk to, shooting down the exfil chopper as it arrives, doing objectives in the wrong order and/or arriving at them from the wrong direction - your mission should respond correctly to all of these.

This is all part of the attraction of OFP - all missions are open ending to some extent because you can go anywhere and do anything.    I do things like leave the occasional vehicle in outlying villages so that if the player does happen to end up there for some reason he doesn't have to walk back.

The plot of your mission should direct the player in the right direction.    However you should always be prepared for tactical deviations:  for example, I never move into a village by the most direct route, I always go round the flank.

Most players of course will stick to "your" mission plan.    However, those playing in Veteran mode will not see the waypoints so you should never use player waypoints to make things happen.     They are an extra guide for Cadet mode players only.   Always use triggers instead.

Sadly I can't help with the domino problem.   Sounds like a bug.    Reboot.

Is one of the player's group sitting in a chopper or a plane? And have you used custom placement radius? And I agree that WP's just dull, but those who are playing in cadet mode probably wants WPs to show up.
