Guerilla AI?
« on: 20 Jul 2003, 23:39:09 »
Hello all,
Would it be possible to create a script that will make the enemy AI use guerilla tactics? For example, the scripted ai's will croutch and hide behind buildings, bushes, and trees...pop out and shoot. Variations of the script could also reflect the poor training of the troops as well, such as shooting each other etc.   :P

Plus, it will help the enemy ai from just going prone in the open, only to run away later.  >:( I think this would nice addition to the OFP experience.

Finally, if someone makes this script, plz give me some credit for the idea.  ;)

Peace,
Kueter

What specifically do you mean by guerillla tactics? Taking cover behind buildings and trees aren't "guerilla tactics", they are just plain common sense. The ai is supposed to use bushes already, but when you get right down to it, there isn't much cover in OFP anyway.

I beg to differ sir, guerilla tactics are primarily based on using cover to the groups' advantage.  This cover enables the group to strike fast, using every weapon they can, and retreat. It may sound like common sense, but in a fierce fire fight, you might be surprised at what troops do.

guerilla tactics may involve using cover, but thats not what they are

and to answer the question, no it isn't possible because ofp doesn't work that way

While it may not be possible to script guerrilla tactics in a hard way (i.e. a unit who solely does those), it is possible to simulate it.

I have done it before, here are the concepts I used:

1. give all units a low courage like around 25%-35%
2. Make them go stealth
3. Make them hold fire
4. use a trigger or script to coordinate their fire
5. let them do whatever they do from this point on

What usually happens:
They crawl up to a point of attack....
Trigger goes off and they all fire at once.....
their courage is so low, that usually when the leader dies or things get heavy they all run away in their own directions.

yeah but his question wasn't about guerilla tactics, he wanted ai units that:

Quote
will croutch and hide behind buildings, bushes, and trees...pop out and shoot

which isn't possible because ofp doesn't work that way
