Affecting the zoom of a weapon
« on: 16 Jul 2003, 14:43:34 »
Well, you all know how some of the scoped weapons can be zoomed in further?
This is getting on my nerves as it doesn't work like that IRL, instead you flick it to 2x, 4x, 6x, 8x and so on.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew of a smart way of:
1) Detecting the current zoom (FOV)
2) Changing that

I know camSetFOV alters the zoom (FOV), but I'm not sure if that'll work since it changes the FOV of a camera, and you generally don't have control over those.
Any ideas on this?

Actually, it does.  I own several variable zoom rifle scopes and they all adjust smoothly from min to max zoom.  There may be some scopes out there that have "click" type zoom adjustment but most are smooth.  Of course, I can't speak for any European scopes as my experience is in American or Japanese made scopes (Leupold, Tasco, Nikon, etc), generally hunting or target scopes.

Oh, and I don't know the answer to your question.  Sorry.  :)

Isn't it just a smooth transition between the different settings that you have?
Possibly in single steps like 1x, 2x, 3x and so on?

Because I've never heard of a scope that zooms without stages.

Yes, the dial is always marked in 1x, 2x, 10x, etc and it is a smooth transition between them.  Instead of 4X, it could actually be set to 3.9X.  You can't really tell  :)

I may have misunderstood your comments.  I thought you meant changing zoom in discrete steps.  I'm sure there are some scopes like that but I haven't personally seen any.  Which doesn't mean much because I wouldn't classify myself as a rifle scope expert.  I just own some.  ;D
